Spotlight on Sorin Darie, RMT, Massage Therapist

We asked our massage therapist, Sorin Darie, about his approach to treatment, his philosophy on massage and some questions about what he does outside the clinic.

1) What brought you to massage therapy?

I was always interested in healthcare and found myself feeling fulfilled whenever I would help a person. The major component that drew me to massage therapy was the ability to help people move pain-free as well as reduce their overall life stress.

2) What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about anatomy and understanding the intricate connections within a person's body. This translates to my clinical practice where I then use that knowledge to try and help people feel better.

3) What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part is seeing the sense of relief on a patient's face after treatment, which I commonly see with a smile.

4) What is the most challenging part of your job?

The most challenging part of my job are the rare cases where either the patient does not feel better after a treatment or if they do it's only to a small degree. Those scenarios are difficult as I expected the treatment to offer more relief, however it's times like those I have to remind myself that progress may be slow at times, and it is still a step in the right direction.

5) How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time continuing my education as best I can. That might look like me reading a book, conversing with fellow colleagues or taking courses. I am also an avid rock climber and take pleasure being on the side of a wall.

6) Who has had a great influence on your life?

One of the greatest influences of my life must be my professor who taught me acupuncture at McMaster University. Although we were taught the therapy in great detail, he managed to also place significant emphasis on other things related to life which really made me see how holistic it can be.

7) What is the most helpful advice you’ve received?

To understand my personal worldview and how that may help or hinder my clinical practice is an example of one thing my professor emphasized greatly. And that includes being aware of any bias I may have and knowing I'll have to adjust accordingly.

8) What do you want your patients to know about how you practice massage therapy?

I want them to know I approach things in a very compassionate manner. I will try my best to relate and understand my patients experience and will always do my best to help them however I can.
