When discussing nutrition with our patients, we often recommend “functional foods”, which are specific foods that have been studied in cancer and provide health benefits beyond their nutrient profile. Two of these foods include ground flaxseeds and walnuts.
Flaxseeds contain anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and compounds called lignans. Studies have shown that these lignans help regulate estrogenic activity and inhibit the negative impacts of xenoestrogens from our environment, leading to a decreased risk of hormone-related cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer. Flaxseeds are also high in fibre, helping to regulate our blood sugar levels – another important factor related to decreasing cancer risk. Walnuts are also a good source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and have been shown to downregulate genetic expression connected to cancer development.
The recipe below is a simple and easy way to incorporate these wonderful functional foods into your diet. It’s also a convenient and healthy snack you can take with you on the go, providing long-lasting fullness and energy!
