Benefits of Gardening
While there’s no shortage of outdoor activities during Summer months, gardening is one that can help boost activity levels, while also increasing fruit and vegetable intake. Another wonderful fact about gardening is that it’s easily scalable and doesn’t require a large backyard as many of us might think. For instance, if you live in an apartment, you can use window boxes and pots to grow smaller plants like herbs, or even join a nearby community garden. If you do have a larger space, you can grow vegetables like peppers and eggplants, as well as fruits such as strawberries.
If you aren’t already convinced to try gardening, here are a few other benefits:
- It’s a great way to feel connected to and interact with nature, while also getting some movement
- It doesn’t require you to venture too far from home
- It can lead to feelings of fulfillment and accomplishment to see your plants sprout, grow, and then enjoy them post-harvest
- Fresh-picked produce is often at its peak for flavour and nutrient levels
- Joining a community garden can double as a social activity that helps you feel connected to others
- It can boost your mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety – gardening is considered a happiness activity
- You’ll get a healthy dose of vitamin D from spending time outside. Just make sure you protect yourself with some safe sunscreen
- It can be an opportunity to bond with family and friends
